Why You Should be Targeting Low Search Volume Topics ASAP

Most new bloggers fail because of one simple thing. They choose to write on topics that no one is really searching for or that have very little search traffic. It's not that their content is bad. It's just that not many people are searching for it.

Experienced bloggers know that you need to find topics to write on that have enough search volume but that are also low competition.

Finding that sweet spot is how you win big in the blogging game. It's a waste of your time and money to create content that has a low search volume.

What if I told you that this isn't true anymore and that you can actually increase your entire site's ranking by creating content with little to no search traffic?

Sounds like complete baloney, right? Well, let me explain to you a little concept called topical authority.

What is Topical Authority?

In the last couple of years, Google has been giving more attention to something called topical authority, and it's becoming a bigger ranking factor every day.

Topical authority is basically Google's way of understanding if you are an expert on a certain topic. It measures your website's trustworthiness and authority on a certain subject.

The more authority your site has on a topic, the higher you will rank in the search results.

How Do You Increase Topical Authority?

Increasing topical authority is a relatively simple process. You need to create a lot of accurate and trustworthy content on a certain topic in your niche.

The more of this content you have on a topic, the more likely Google is to see you as an authority figure on that topic.

Think about it this way: if you're looking for information on a new car, are you going to trust the website that has one blog post about it or the website that has 100 blog posts?

The answer is obvious.

The website with more information is going to be seen as more trustworthy and authoritative, and you're going to be more likely to find the information you're looking for.

The same goes for Google. The more content you have on a certain topic, the more likely Google is to see you as an authority figure on that topic.

Using Topic Clusters to Build Topical Authority

Topic clusters are a way to group and organize your content around a certain topic. Topic clusters go hand in hand with topical authority. You're basically choosing an overall topic and then planning out large batches of related content around that topic.

Think of it this way…

For example, let's say you have a blog about cars. You could have a topic cluster on “how to buy a car.” This topic cluster would include all of the content you have on your website related to buying a car.

You might have articles like:

  1. How to test drive a car
  2. How to negotiate a car price
  3. How to buy a used car
  4. What to look for when buying a car
  5. How to get the best financing for a car

Each of these articles would be its own blog post, but they would all be related to the main topic of “how to buy a car.”

Your website may be all about cars in general, but starting off with one or two topic clusters is going to drastically increase your blog's authority on those subjects.

By increasing your topical authority using topic clusters, you can increase your topical authority on a certain topic, which in turn, will help you rank higher in the search results.

Why Writing on Low Search Volume Topics Works

Most bloggers have the old mindset of only targeting keywords and search queries that have high search volumes. They only want to write on topics that they believe will drive traffic.

While this does still work, it's much better to completely dominate a topic as much as you can. Even if the article you're writing for the topic cluster doesn't have much search traffic, you should write it anyway so that you've covered it in-depth.

Imagine for a moment if you're trying to learn a skill and you decided to buy a course. What if the instructor of the course decided to only teach the things that people had the most questions about but left the rest out?

Would you say this is a great course? I know I wouldn't.

This is the same thing bloggers do all the time. By only writing on content that has a high search volume and ignoring the low search volume topics, it makes their website feel incomplete and lacking.

Google is starting to take note of this as well, which is why topical authority is beginning to matter more and more each day and with each Google update.

Should You Outsource Low Search Volume Articles?

While writing low-search volume articles to gain topical authority is something you definitely should be doing in your business, outsourcing them to writers may or may not be right for everyone's business.

Depending on what your budget is for content creation, your initial ROI for these articles may not be enough to warrant outsourcing them.

For example, if your writers have a $40 flat rate per article, you could easily burn through a lot of money targeting these low search volume topics.

However, if you're paying your writers hourly, then this may not be as bad, depending on the depth needed to cover the topic.

Not only does writing on low-volume search topics increase your topical authority, but it also provides great interlink opportunities.

Interlinking is the process of linking to other articles on your website from within your blog posts. This tells Google that all of your content is related and that you're an authority on the subject.

Google loves websites that have a lot of relevant, high-quality content, and by interlinking your articles, you're essentially telling Google that your website is a goldmine of information on a certain topic.

It also helps your readers find more content and stay on your website. The longer readers stay on your site, the more money you will make from display ads and any affiliate links they click on while they're there.
